Potable Water Law
Beginning January 1, 2027 for government properties, January 1, 2028 for commercial properties, and January 1, 2029 for HOA common areas, California properties can no longer use drinking (potable) water to irrigate purely decorative turf. AB 1572 phases out potable-water irrigation of “nonfunctional turf” — grass that isn’t used for recreation or gathering – on government, commercial, and HOA properties statewide.
